Top 10 Coconut Producing States In India: Coconut is one of the most important and useful fruits grown in India. From food to festivals, and from skincare to traditional medicine, coconut plays a big role in our daily life. Among all its products, coconut water is considered the most special and is often called “magic water” because of its natural health benefits. It is rich in minerals, electrolytes, and antioxidants that keep the body hydrated and energetic. It’s also known to improve digestion, support the immune system, and cool the body, especially during the summer.

Why is Coconut Referred To As Magic Water?

Coconut water is regarded as the most unique of all its products and is frequently referred to as "magic water” due to its natural health benefits. Coconut water is the clear, naturally sweet liquid found inside young, green coconuts. It forms naturally when the coconut tree absorbs water from the soil and filters it through the roots and trunk into the fruit.

As the coconut develops, this filtered water gathers inside the nut, rich in essential minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and electrolytes that help keep the body hydrated and energised. Additionally, it has been shown to strengthen the immune system, aid in digestion, and cool the body, especially in the summer.

Karnataka is the largest coconut-producing state, with more than 6,151 million coconuts produced in the year 2023 to 2024. Because of their red loamy soil and moderate rainfall, coastal and southern areas like Tumkur, Udupi, and Chitradurga are perfect for growing coconuts. Year-round cultivation is supported by the tropical climate, which has temperatures ranging from 27°C to 32°C. Harvesting takes place all year long, with the main coconut flowering occurring from May to September.

 2. Tamil Nadu – 6,091.98 Million Nuts

With its main cultivation in Coimbatore, Pollachi, and Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu comes in second. The state benefits from stable temperatures between 25°C and 35°C as well as well-drained sandy loam soil. During the southwest and northeast monsoons, rainfall contributes to the preservation of soil moisture. Harvesting takes place all year long, with planting typically taking place between June and September.

3. Kerala – 5,522.71 Million Nuts

Kerala, frequently referred to as the "land of coconuts," produces a lot of them in coastal areas like Thrissur, Kozhikode and Malappuram. Coconut trees thrive there because of the laterite-rich soil, humid tropical climate, and intense monsoon rains. Harvests take place every 45 to 60 days after the trees reach maturity, and coconuts are grown from May to July.

4. Andhra Pradesh – 1,707.08 Million Nuts

Particularly in East and West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh has become a major producer of coconuts. Good growth is favoured by the warm, humid climate and deltaic soil found in river systems. When trees reach maturity, harvesting cycles occur all year long, with planting typically taking place between June and August.

5. West Bengal – 421.18 Million Nuts

In West Bengal, districts like South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas are ideal for coconut cultivation. The area is appropriate because of its rich alluvial soil, coastal climate, and steady rainfall. Harvesting occurs every two months, with July through September being the ideal planting season.

6. Odisha – 399.43 Million Nuts

Coconuts are primarily grown in Puri, Ganjam, and Cuttack along Odisha's coastal belt. The ideal conditions are sandy loam soil, high humidity, and moderate rainfall from June to September. Typically, coconuts are planted in the monsoon season and are harvested five to seven years later.

7. Gujarat – 246.08 Million Nuts

Coconuts are grown in Gujarat using groundwater and canal irrigation, especially in the districts of Valsad and Navsari. Effective irrigation systems help to balance the hot, semi-arid climate. Laterite and sandy loam soils aid in growth. With a consistent harvest all year long, coconuts are primarily planted between July and September.

8. Assam – 178.27 Million Nuts

Moderate coconut farming is possible in Assam's warm, humid districts like Barpeta and Nalbari. Together with water supplied by the monsoon, the state's sandy and alluvial soils foster growth. Harvesting occurs every 60 to 70 days, and planting usually takes place in May or June, the pre-monsoon season.

9. Bihar – 46.42 Million Nuts

Bihar’s small-scale coconut farming is mainly in the north-east and Mithilanchal regions. Despite being non-coastal, loamy soil and growing irrigation networks help. The planting season is around June–August, aligning with the monsoon, and harvest occurs year-round once the trees mature.

10. Tripura – 19.45 Million Nuts

Despite being relatively small, Tripura's output is important for the area. Coconuts thrive in regions like West Tripura and Sepahijala because of their warm, humid climate and rich alluvial soil. Plantations are supported by monsoon-fed water, with a rotational cycle of harvesting and sowing in June and July.
