In this article, let’s learn about the top coffee-producing Indian states and how they uniquely contribute to the enormous coffee business in the nation.
States with the highest coffee production in India
South Indian states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu remain the backbone of India's coffee production. However, other states especially northeastern states are also coming up with unique contributions towards coffee production in the country. The ability of the coffee industry to withstand and respond to challenges and opportunities in the global coffee market will be the key to the country’s future beverage business.
1. Karnataka
Karnataka is the biggest producer of coffee in India, and much of its production is from the districts of Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. The South Indian state produces both Arabica and Robusta coffee, but the locally prominent one is Robusta because it is more adaptable and yields more.
2. Kerala
Kerala is the second-largest producer, with considerable coffee production from districts such as Idukki, Kollam, and Wayanad. In Kerala, coffee is usually intercropped with spices such as pepper, cardamom and vanilla for the region's agricultural diversity and to strengthen the economy.
3. Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu grows a significant amount of coffee, mainly in the districts of Coimbatore, Dindigul and Nilgiris. The climate and soil conditions of the region are suitable for Arabica production, which contributes to its unique flavour profile and quality in coffee dynamics.
4. Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh is not a new addition to national coffee production. However, the rising growth of Robusta coffee production in areas of Andhra Pradesh like Eastern Ghats is making it a significant name in coffee production in India. Coffee cultivation in this state mainly happens in districts like East Godavari and Visakhapatnam.
5. Odisha
Odisha grows coffee mostly in the Koraput, Malkangiri, and Rayagada districts, which maximises the potential of Robusta varieties. The state’s goal for 2025 is to increase coffee production through sustainable methods and better farming practices.
6. Sikkim
Sikkim is a new coffee-producing state, with an emphasis on organic and speciality coffee to get the best possible business from the premium market. The state is currently focused on sustainable farming practices, which has contributed to its rising status in the speciality coffee market.
7. Tripura
Tripura's coffee production is limited but increasing with a focus on yield and quality improvement. The coffee farming of the state is mainly confined to the northeastern regions, which are perfect for growing coffee due to the tropical climate.
8. West Bengal
West Bengal has a low production volume of coffee, the state only grows coffee in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts. Arabica coffee is the main focus of the state where high altitudes and cold climate are ideal for cultivating quality beans.
9. Assam
Assam is not conventionally famous for coffee, however, with increasing coffee consumption the state is stepping into coffee farming, especially in the Karbi Anglong district. The climate and soil of the state are promising for both Arabica and Robusta types, which offers a massive scope for growth.
