Countries Facing Severe:  Food is the most basic necessity for humankind, and unfortunately, several nations are currently facing severe food insecurities. The prime reason for countries witnessing major food insecurity is humanitarian crises like economic instability, high population, climate shock, and social unrest. Let's take a close look at the top 10 countries which are facing severe food insecurity across the globe, as per the Food Security Information Network (FSIN), Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2025.

Top 10 Countries Facing Severe Food Insecurity

Nigeria

Nigeria is facing the biggest food insecurity in the world, with around 31.8 million individuals experiencing high acute food insecurity. The nation is suffering a historic hunger crisis, all due to inflation, climate effects in the form of destructive floods, in urgency, particularly in the northeast states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, and increasing food prices. More than 5 million people in the northeast region are threatened, of whom 5.4 million children are exposed to acute malnutrition.

Sudan

Sudan is the second-worst-affected country, with around 25.6 million people suffering from the risk of acute hunger. The reason for food insecurity here is long-running conflicts, political unrest, and displacement that have affected the food production and supply.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The country of central Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is also suffering from dangerous food insecurity, with almost 25.6 million people facing high acute food insecurity, all due to long-running conflicts, political unrest and limited humanitarian access.

Bangladesh

India's neighbouring country, Bangladesh, is also suffering from acute hunger across the nation, with almost 23.6 million people. The major factors responsible for the worst conditions here are poverty, inequality, and vulnerability to natural disasters.

Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, a total of 22 million people are suffering from severe food insecurity primarily as a result of climate shocks like floods and droughts, along with chronic poverty, which are keeping the nation away from high-quality food.

Yemen

In the Middle Eastern country, Yemen, around 16.7 million people are facing huge food insecurity because of the long-running conflict, economic crisis and low quality of living; these are the major reasons that have limited the food imports.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is situated at the crossroads of Central and South Asia, and here, almost 15.8 million people are struggling with food insecurity fueled by political instability, conflict, and economic disintegration.

Syrian Arab Republic

Syrian Arab Republic concludes the list of countries with the most food insecurity in the world. Almost 9.2 million Syrian people continue to experience high levels of food insecurity due to the long-running war and economic deterioration.

India’s Rank On The List Of Countries Facing Severe Food Insecurity:

India is not among the top 10 for 2024 severe acute food insecurity. However, as per the 2024 Global Hunger Index, India ranks in 105th position out of 127 countries, with a score of 27.3, which proves that India has a serious level of hunger, which is not as acute as the other nations on the list. The nation of billions requires better policies and schemes for the better welfare of its citizens.

Extreme acute food insecurity is a pressing global issue currently and is centred in countries affected by conflict, economic crisis, and ecological shocks. Urgent humanitarian aid and sustainable development interventions are the key to relieving the suffering of these millions of individuals, derived from basic human needs, which is unfortunately hunger.
