Top 10 Most-Visited States In India: India has seen a significant rise in its tourism market over the last few years, especially the domestic tourism. This rapid growth has been particularly beneficial for the overall growth of India’s economy. The nation of billions has showcased around 2.95 billion visitors in 2024, with a growth rate of 17.51 per cent over the previous year. To be specific, the total growth of the top five states accounted for 60.38 per cent of the total tourism share. All thanks to cultural sites, spiritual places, historic regions, and better connectivity that made India flourish in the field of tourism.
To know more, here is a list of the Top 10 Most-Visited States In India In 2024-25, according to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, Ministry of Tourism. Additionally, the Data is gathered by the States/UTs Tourism Department.

Which Are The Top 10 Most-Visited States In India And Why?
1. Uttar Pradesh:
Uttar Pradesh is the most-visited state in India, with a growing visitor population of 646.8 million. The most populated Indian state is responsible for 21.94 per cent national share of tourism in the country. All thanks to attractions like the Taj Mahal, which is among the seven wonders of the world and one of the most spiritual places of India, like the ghats of Varanasi, and the Ram Temple at Ayodhya.
2. Tamil Nadu:
Tamil Nadu is the second-most visited state in India, with an annual tourist population of 306.8 million. From its ancient temples in Madurai, coastal Marina Beach, and hill stations like Ooty, all attractions are popular places to visit by families across India and beyond. This South Indian state is responsible for a 10.41 per cent share of the total tourism in India.

3. Karnataka
Karnataka is the third-most visited state in India, with a total of 304.6 million visitors yearly. This south Indian state accounts for 10.33 per cent national tourism share and all thanks to urban IT hubs like Bangalore, along with UNESCO World Heritage sites like Hampi. Mysore Palace also attract thousands of tourists every year.
4. Andhra Pradesh
With 9.85 per cent of the total tourism share, Andhra Pradesh shines because of attractions like the Tirupati Temple and beaches like Visakhapatnam. Many devotees also visit the state for its spiritual temples.
5. Rajasthan
While the share of Rajasthan has grown from 179.05 million and accounted for 7.80 per cent of nationwide tourism, its main tourist attractions are forts of Jaipur, lakes of Udaipur, and desert safaris, which is a whole royal experience, people dream of experiencing.

6. Gujarat
Gujarat's 6.24 per cent share increased marginally from 178.07 million. Somnath Temple, Rann of Kutch, and Gir Lion Sanctuary are some of the most visited places.
7. Maharashtra:
Maharashtra is responsible for 6.42 per cent of national tourism. The state of Maharashtra offers the picturesque Mumbai's Gateway, Ajanta Caves and beaches, along with urban life, which is loved by many.
8. West Bengal:
Kolkata's Durga Puja is world famous and welcomes numerous devotees every year. Currently, the state welcomes 184.5 million visitors annually, which is 6.26 per cent of India’s total tourism.
9. Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is responsible for 4.52 per cent of national tourism. All thanks to Khajuraho temples, Bhimbetka caves, and Kanha safaris that showcase the wildlife and historic significance of the state.
10. Himachal Pradesh:
One of the most popular places to visit during summer vacations. Himachal Pradesh welcome 18 million tourists yearly, which is 0.61 per cent of the total share. The place is famous for its picturesque view of Shimla Manali and Dharamshala, which is perfect for nature lovers.
Each of the above-mentioned state showcase India’s rich diversity and robust tourism economy. This list is a result of India’s significant efforts in infrastructure and promotion of state-wise tourism.
