They provide essential nutrients, keep us healthy, and also sustain millions of farmers worldwide. Depending on their climate, soil and farming methods, different nations produce different kinds of vegetables. Each region has its unique crops, ranging from leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and onions. Each year, on 16 June 2025, Fresh Veggies Day is celebrated to observe the importance of fresh and green vegetables in our dishes and for health.
In recent years, global vegetable production has increased due to improved technology, better irrigation systems and increased demand worldwide. By producing vast quantities of fresh produce for both domestic consumption and export, some nations have emerged as leaders in the field of vegetable farming. With annual vegetable production of hundreds of millions of tons, nations like China and India are at the top of the list. Others that cultivate a wide range of vegetables on a large scale include Vietnam, the United States and Turkey. China produces more than 600 million tons of vegetables annually, while India produces more than 200 million tons of vegetables in a variety of crops.

Based on recent production data, this list identifies the top 10 vegetable-producing nations worldwide. It also lists the primary vegetables grown in each nation. These countries contribute significantly to the world's supply of fresh, nutritious produce, from leafy greens in Southeast Asia to root vegetables in Europe and North America.

1. China

China is the world's largest producer of vegetables, with an annual production of more than 600 million tons of vegetables. In 2024, China produced 662 million tons of vegetables. It produces almost half of the world's vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, garlic, peppers and spinach. Cucumber, tomato and eggplant yields are also increased by greenhouse farming.
2. India
According to the Press Information Bureau, India produced roughly 209.39 million tons of vegetables in 2024. Potatoes, onions, tomatoes, beans, spinach, cauliflower, okra, cucumbers, ginger, garlic and cabbage are among the main crops. Grown in different climates, these staples sustain the food industry and rural jobs.
3. Turkey
Turkey produces a lot of vegetables, including cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, spinach, lettuce, onions and garlic. Important vegetables include fresh beans, watermelons, melons, tomatoes (which are the top exporter) and spring produce such as peas, asparagus, artichokes, broccoli and carrots.
4. United States
With about 30 million tons produced annually, the US is a significant producer of vegetables. Due to diversified farming and greenhouse technology, common crops include tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, peppers, onions, broccoli, carrots, peas, beans, cucumbers, garlic and cauliflower.

Vietnam is also one of the leading producers, growing a variety of vegetables, including tropical vegetables, cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, gourds, beans and leafy greens like spinach and bok choy. Both exports and domestic markets are supported by these.
6. Nigeria
Common vegetables grown in Nigeria include cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers (including chilli), onions, okra, and leafy greens (amaranth, spinach). These give small-scale farmers vital nutrition and revenue.
7. Egypt
Cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, leafy greens, beans, garlic, and okra are among the vegetables produced in Egypt. Both open-field and greenhouse farming prosper because of Nile irrigation.
8. Mexico
Mexican farmers mainly cultivate leafy greens, avocados, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, beans, and squash. Two important export crops that grow quickly in greenhouse production for year-round availability are tomatoes and chillies.

Indonesia produces greenhouse and open-field vegetables such as chilli peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, beans, cucumbers, eggplants, leafy greens (spinach, kangkong) and root crops like sweet potatoes and yams.
10. Russia
Russia ranks 10th in producing vegetables globally. Among the vegetables produced in Russia are potatoes, carrots, cabbages, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, beets, zucchini, peppers, garlic and leafy greens. In the north, the use of greenhouses to extend the growing season is growing.
