List Of 42 Newly Added Words In Oxford Dictionary: OED is an Oxford English Dictionary published by Oxford University Press and is the principal historical dictionary of the English language. Now and then, OED comes with new additions or updates of words as per usage and trends. Recently, the OED has added 42 new words, including gigil, which is making a buzz on the internet. Many of these 42 terms are ‘untranslatable’ and are borrowed from different languages. These additions also highlight the richness of global languages and their influence on English vocabulary.

What Does 'Gigil' Mean?

The term gigil is derived from the Philippine language of Tagalog and recently, has been incorporated into the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). It refers to a strong sensation of overpowering emotion that is usually provoked by cuteness, frustration or excitement. The feeling usually comes with a physical reaction like gritting teeth, clenching fists, or shaking. Psychologists also term it as Cute Aggression, wherein intense love for something cute comes along with an intense desire to pinch or squeeze it.

Irish English:

Blaa - A soft bread roll, typically associated with Waterford, Ireland.

Class - Excellent or very good.

Debs- Short for "debutante ball," referring to formal school-leaving dances in Ireland.

Ludraman - A lazy or unproductive person.

Mineral - A term used in Ireland to refer to a soft drink or soda.

Morto - Embarrassed or mortified.

Spice bag - A popular Irish takeaway dish consisting of fried chicken, chips, and spices.

Malaysian English and Singapore English:

Alamak - An exclamation of surprise or dismay.


Fish head curry - A dish made with fish heads cooked in curry sauce.


Half-boiled egg - An egg cooked until the white is set but the yolk remains runny.


Kaya - A sweet coconut jam made with eggs and sugar.


Kaya toast - Toast spread with kaya and butter.


Ketupat - When rice is packed in woven palm leaves and boiled.


Mat rempit - Reckless motorcyclists known for illegal street racing.


Nasi lemak - A fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and served with various accompaniments.


Otak-otak - Grilled fish cake made from ground fish meat mixed with spices.


Steamboat - A communal hot pot meal where ingredients are cooked at the table in simmering broth.


Tapau - To take food away; takeaway.


Terror - Excellent or outstanding.

Philippine English

CR - An abbreviation for "comfort room," meaning a restroom or toilet.


Gigil - Overwhelming emotion (e.g., cuteness or frustration), often expressed physically.


Kababayan - Fellow countryman or compatriot.


Load - Prepaid credit for mobile phones.


Lumpia - Filipino spring rolls filled with meat or vegetables.


Pinoy - Relating to Filipinos or Filipino culture.


Salakot - A traditional wide-brimmed hat made of bamboo or rattan.


Sando - A sleeveless undershirt or tank top.


Terror - Excellent or outstanding (also used in Malaysian English).


Thomasite - American teachers sent to the Philippines during its early 20th-century colonial period.

South African English

Gatvol - Fed up; having had enough of something.


Makarapa - Decorated helmets worn by South African football fans.


Moggy - Mischievous; also refers to a cat (British origin but adopted locally).


Seshweshwe/Shweshwe- Traditional South African printed fabric used for clothing.

Variants:  Seshweshwe/Shweshwefabric meanings are identical but spelled differently regionally.

Sharp-sharp - An expression meaning 'okay' or 'quickly.'

Skabenga - A criminal or rogue person; slang for a troublemaker.

The hell-in - Used to express extreme anger or frustration.

Tjoekie - Prison slang for jail or incarceration.

Yoh - An exclamation expressing surprise or amazement.
