US President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will participate in their first presidential debate of the 2024 general election on Thursday night in Atlanta. This marks the beginning of a new phase in the presidential race, with less than five months remaining until Election Day on November 5, highlighting the closely contested nature. It is the earliest-ever debate in a presidential campaign, occurring before the Republican and Democratic conventions in July and August, where both Trump and Biden will formally accept their party's nominations. The debate is set to last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks.
Here’s all you need to know about the first Biden-Trump Presidential debate of the US election season.
When Is The First US Presidential Debate?
The first US presidential debate is scheduled for Thursday, June 27, at 9 PM ET/ 6:30 AM IST, hosted at CNN's studios in Georgia. Veteran CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the Presidential debate.
Where To Watch Biden-Trump Presidential Debate?
CNN will air the debate across all its platforms, including its main cable channel, CNN International, CNN en Español, and CNN Max. The network will also live stream the debate on CNN.com without requiring viewers to log in or subscribe.
CNN will also be providing its feed to other broadcast and cable news networks for simulcast, meaning the debate can be watched on channels like Fox News, ABC News, and potentially others.
What are the new rules for the US Presidential Debate?
CNN has implemented new regulations aimed at maintaining decorum and order. Under these rules, each candidate's microphone will be muted while the other is speaking, preventing interruptions. This change comes in response to the 2020 debate where Trump's frequent interruptions prompted Biden to interject, "Will you shut up, man?"
Unlike previous debates, there will be no live studio audience to minimise disruptions caused by audience reactions. Additionally, there will be no opening statements; instead, the debate will commence directly with questions posed to the candidates. Props or pre-written notes on stage will not be permitted to be used. Instead, they will be provided with a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water.
Each candidate will have two minutes to respond initially, followed by one-minute rebuttals and responses to rebuttals. Moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will strictly enforce these time limits.
