The FBI in Salt Lake City has released the first images of a “person of interest” linked to the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, urging the public to help identify the individual. The release marks the first visual evidence law enforcement has made public in its ongoing probe into Kirk’s death, which has shaken conservative circles across the United States.
At a press conference, FBI officials expressed confidence that investigators are closing in on the suspect, citing “good video footage” and “strong leads” that track the man’s movements before and after the shooting.
Authorities also confirmed the recovery of a high-powered rifle believed to have been used in the killing. The weapon was discovered in a wooded area where the shooter fled, along with forensic traces including a footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints. These are now undergoing detailed analysis at FBI laboratories.

USD 100,000 Reward For Information
In an escalation of the investigation, the FBI announced a reward of up to USD 100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual or individuals responsible. Officials said more than 130 tips from the public had already been received as of Thursday morning. “The public is our greatest ally,” one FBI agent said, urging anyone with photos, videos, or details to come forward via dedicated phone lines and online submission portals.
US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard paid tribute to Kirk, calling him “a courageous soul” who “truly loved our country.” She suggested that the shooter may have been motivated by a desire to silence him. “I’m devastated that Erika lost her husband today, their children lost their father, and so many of us lost a dear friend,” Gabbard wrote, adding that Kirk had “stood up to fanatics who hate freedom.”
Suspect Details Emerging
Officials believe the shooter is of college age and blended in easily on the campus where Kirk was speaking. Surveillance footage shows the suspect arriving at 11:52 am local time. Following the shooting, he allegedly fled across the roof of the Losee Centre building before disappearing into a nearby neighbourhood.
Trump Announces Posthumous Medal of Freedom
At a separate event commemorating 9/11 victims, US President Donald Trump addressed Kirk’s death directly, describing him as “greatly missed” but assured that his influence would endure. Trump announced that Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
“We miss him greatly,” Trump told the crowd. “Charlie’s voice and courage will live on in the hearts of countless people, especially young people.”
