Amid a fervid election campaign in the United States (US), former President Donald Trump had an extremely close shave after a bullet from gunfire pierced his ear during a rally in western Pennsylvania’s Butler. Trump was immediately taken off the stage and escorted out by Secret Service agents to his vehicle. Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesperson for the US Secret Service, said the former US President was safe and more information in this regard will be divulged as it becomes available.

The videos of the incident are vehemently making the rounds across social media platforms. When the gunshot was heard, Trump could be seen grabbing his right ear while kneeling down behind the podium. Following the incident, a swarm of US Secret Service agents rushed to cover him.

A source, cited by the news agency Reuters, said that the shooter was killed, and the US Secret Service was trying to determine the shooter's motives and the attempt on Trump's life. There are also reports of another person present at the rally being killed.

US President Joe Biden expressed his anguish over the incident, adding that the act must be unequivocally condemned. He also thanked the Secret Service for safely evacuating Trump. “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it,” he posted on X.

Divulging details of the incident, Donald Trump thanked The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies for their swift response. "I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured," he said.

"It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, and shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA," Trump added.
