Shortly after US Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’ campaign said it raised an unprecedented USD 100 million, Donald Trump's campaign filed a complaint against Harris on Wednesday. The complaint alleged that Harris committed "a USD 91.5 million heist" by inappropriately using Joe Biden’s campaign funds after he withdrew from the presidential race on Sunday.
The complaint, filed on Tuesday by David Warrington, Trump campaign's general counsel, further argues that moving the funds to Harris's presidential campaign would constitute a “blatant violation” of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.
President Biden on Sunday declared his withdrawal from the November 5 presidential race and endorsed Harris, following increasing pressure from leading Democrats and donors after his poor performance in the presidential debate against Trump in late June.
Soon after Biden withdrew from the race, Harris became the presumptive Republican nominee, renamed Biden’s campaign committee "Harris for President," and took control of its bank accounts. Her campaign reported that it has since raised over USD 100 million in new funds.
"Kamala Harris is seeking to perpetrate a USD 91.5 million dollar heist of Joe Biden's leftover campaign cash—a brazen money grab that would constitute the single largest excessive contribution and biggest violation in the history of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended," Warrington said, as reported by PTI.
Harris Campaign Dismisses FEC Complaint
Harris' campaign on Tuesday announced that it has raised USD 100 million since Sunday, when Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her — surpassing Biden's remaining total in just a few days. The campaign dismissed the FEC complaint.
“Republicans might be envious that Democrats are energised to defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, but unfounded legal claims — like those they've used for years to try to suppress votes and steal elections — will only serve as distractions while we recruit volunteers, engage with voters, and win this election,” stated Harris campaign spokesperson Charles Kretchmer Lutvak, as reported by CBS News.
