Barack Obama, former United States President has an annual ritual of sharing a list of his favourite movies with his followers globally. This year too, he took to his Instagram handle and revealed the movies that made an impression on him and made him laugh and cry. He wrote that his pick for the year’s best movies is a little “biased” as they are films produced by Higher Ground Media.
Higher Ground is a production company founded by Obama and his wife Michelle Obama in 2018. His top three picks include: ‘Rustin’ starring Colman Domingo, Chris Rock, Jeffrey Wright, and Audra McDonald, ‘Leave The World Behind’ starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, Kevin Bacon, and ‘American Symphony’ starring Jon Batiste. Other mentions in his list include: ‘The Holdovers’, ‘Blackberry’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘American Fiction’, ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’, ‘Monster’, ‘Past Lives’, ‘Air’, ‘Polite Society’, ‘A Thousand And One’.
In the Instagram post, he wrote “Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and protections. It led to important changes that will transform the industry for the better.
Here are some films that reflect their hard work over the last year — including some like Rustin, American Symphony, and Leave the World Behind that we were proud to release through @HigherGroundMedia.”

He also released a list of favourite books of 2023 and some of his picks included ‘The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store’ by James McBride, ‘The Maniac’ by Benjamin Labatut, ‘Poverty, By America’ by Matthew Desmond, and others. People who admire the former US President took to the comments section of the post and expressed their views on his choice of movies. A major emphasis was put on the absence of the global hit movie ‘Barbie’ from the list. Barack Obama’s top three picks of the year are available for streaming on Netflix.
