James Gunn's new Superman from DC Studios has been riding high in success. It has been smashing records at the box office in India and worldwide. Thanks to its storyline and powerful performances, it has generated a significant amount of buzz and been lauded for the same by moviegoers since its release on July 11. David Corenswet, who stepped into the footsteps of Henry Cavill as Superman, has been receiving widespread appreciation. Recently, director-writer Gunn opened up about letting Henry Cavill go from the DCU and recalled the actor's reaction to his exitJames Gunn On Replacing Henry Cavill In Superman
Before James Gunn was announced as the Superman director, it had been stated that Henry Cavill would reprise his role as the Man of Steel. However, after Gunn took over DC Studios and decided to helm a new Superman film with a new actor, it created an “unfair” situation for the actor. In a conversation with Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn was quoted by Variety as saying, "It’s terrible. Believe it or not, the day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back." Gunn admitted that he was taken aback by the news and stated, "And I’m like, ‘What is going on?’ We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do ‘Superman.’ So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer. That was really unfortunate."
According to Gunn, the miscommunication arose from a studio group trying to force their own vision for DC, which was never part of the equation.
The filmmaker also remembered how he broke this news to Cavill. He added, “So Peter and I [thought] the right thing to do was to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, ‘The only thing I ask is that I’m able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys.’”

Like every Superman fan, the host of the show, Josh Horowitz, echoed the sentiment by asking if it would be “too confusing” to cast Cavill in another character in the DCU. To his Gunn responded, “Absolutely not.”
“I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something," he stated.
