The Last Of Us Season 2 episode 6, which was directed by Neil Druckmann, a co-creator of the series, illuminates the events that led to Joel and Ellie's estrangement during the five years between Seasons 1 and 2.

Teenage Joel's With His Father
The Last Of Us Season 2 episode 6 begins in the past, with Joel and Tommy, both teenagers, anxiously awaiting the return of their father, a police officer. Tommy, who was arrested attempting to purchase narcotics, fears that his father will beat him. Joel chooses to accept responsibility and holds off on telling their father. But upon his return, their father (played by Tony Dalton from Better Call Saul) tells them how he has made an effort to be a better parent to them. His jaw was wired shut for two days after he was severely beaten by his own father. He tells Joel at the end of the scene that he will understand it when he has his own kids.
Joel And Ellie's Memories
Joel custom-made a guitar for Ellie and got her a special vanilla cake for her 14th birthday, according to one of the flashback recollections. In order to resume wearing short sleeves, Ellie first purposefully burns the bite marks on her arm. Later on in their journey, Joel takes Ellie to an abandoned science museum, and Ellie pretends to launch into space in an actual Apollo 15 command module. These characters are most likely at their happiest right now.

The Porch Scene
Pascal and Ramsay finally air it out, recreating the huge scene from the video game The Last of Us Part II. Before Joel's terrible demise, this is most likely the last time the adoptive father and daughter will spend together. Joel acknowledges what he did when Ellie confronts him about what transpired in Salt Lake City during the first season when he saved her. "That was my purpose. My life would have fucking mattered! But you took that from me! You took it from everyone."
