US President Joe Biden on Sunday announced he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race against former president Donald Trump, causing significant political flutter across the world. Following the big announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate. The president’s decision is a shocking twist in an election already shaken by an assassination attempt on the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.

- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed Biden for his historic accomplishments as the President. "It has been — and remains —the honor of my life to work for POTUS for the past twenty-two years. He has restored U.S. leadership around the world and delivered historic accomplishments as President. I look forward to building on that record with him over the next six months," Blinken posted on X

- Former US President Barack Obama praised Biden as "one of America's most consequential presidents" and "patriot of the highest order” after he opted out of the key Presidential race. Obama also recalled the time when he chose Biden as his vice President for the latter’s remarkable qualities
- Since he announced the big decision, Biden spoke to a number of leaders, including members of Congress, governors and supporters, White House said. He will continue to engage with key stakeholders today and tomorrow as well
- On being endorsed by President Biden, Kamala Harris said she was honoured and intends to win the Democratic Party's nomination for the November presidential polls
- Trump and his supporters have already started targeting Harris, assuming that she would run for the key post after Biden’s withdrawal. Minutes after Biden announced his retraction from the White House race on Sunday, Trump labelled him as “the worst president ever.”
- The Democratic Party has been divided over a plethora of issues since Biden’s poor debate performance on June 27. Many had even questioned his ability to defeat Trump in forthcoming polls
- Harris’ campaign officials and supporters on Sunday made hundreds of calls to garner support for her presidential nomination. Notably, the Democratic National Convention will be held in August. Harris would be trying her best to block any potential challengers
- Democratic state party chairs held a Sunday afternoon call to discuss endorsing Harris as the party's nominee. Several participants confirmed their full support for Harris
