As US Vice President Kamala Harris gears up for the fight against the former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump, the presumptive Democratic nominee on Sunday officially launched "Republicans for Harris" to gain support from Republican voters.
According to Harris' team, the program will act as a campaign within a campaign, enlisting prominent Republicans to leverage their networks, especially targeting primary voters who supported former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.
The initiative will start with events this week in Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Republicans supporting Harris will also join rallies with the vice president and her forthcoming running mate in the coming week, the campaign announced.
“The initiative is a grassroots organising program to further outreach efforts to the millions of Republican voters who continue to reject the chaos, division, and violence of Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda,” the Harris campaign said in a statement on Sunday.
'Trump’s Extremism Is Toxic To Millions Of Republicans'
“Trump’s extremism is toxic to the millions of Republicans who no longer believe the party of Donald Trump represents their values and will vote against him again in November,” Harris’ national director of Republican outreach, Austin Weatherford told AP.
He stated that the campaign would focus on showing up and dedicating time each day to earn the support of Republicans who prioritise the country over the party. They believe every American deserves a president who will safeguard their freedoms and a commander-in-chief who will prioritise the welfare of the American people over personal interests.
Almost 30 GOP members were highlighted as part of the new 'Republicans for Harris' initiative launched on Sunday. Among them are Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary under Trump, and Olivia Troye, who served as Vice President Mike Pence’s national security advisor. Also included are Chuck Hagel and Ray LaHood, who were Republican cabinet members under President Barack Obama.
