At the Democratic National Convention (DNC) that began on Monday evening in Chicago, Vice President Kamala Harris expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden for his leadership and dedication to the nation.
Biden is scheduled to give a keynote address later today, where he will highlight the progress achieved in the past three and a half years and endorse Harris as the future leader to continue this progress.
"I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible President Joe Biden," Harris said during brief surprise remarks at the DNC in Chicago.
"Thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you will continue to do. We are forever grateful to you," Harris further said.
The first night of the DNC features notable speakers, including President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A video played at the convention showcased Harris's California upbringing and the influence of her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian breast cancer researcher who passed away in 2009.

Harris, the daughter of Jamaican-born Donald Harris and Indian-born Shyamala Gopalan, is the first Asian American and Black woman to lead a major party ticket.
Earlier this month, Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate after Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her. The Democratic Party unified behind her nomination following Biden's exit, driven by concerns over his age and a disappointing debate performance against Donald Trump in June.
Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, 60, as her running mate, opting for him over other prominent candidates from politically strategic states.
At the convention, former President Barack Obama will speak on Tuesday under the theme "A Bold Vision for the Future."
Former President Bill Clinton and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi will address the convention on Wednesday, focusing on "A Fight for Freedom." Additionally, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are expected to speak this week.
Mike Waltz, Kamala Harris's running mate, will formally accept the vice-presidential nomination on Wednesday. Harris is set to accept the presidential nomination during her speech on Thursday, which will be themed "For the Future."
Harris will arrive at the convention following a bus tour through Pennsylvania and will hold a rally in Milwaukee on Tuesday, the same city where Trump accepted the Republican nomination last month. Although the convention typically includes a roll call vote for nominations, Harris's status as the presidential nominee was solidified earlier this month with a majority of delegates secured through a virtual roll call.
