The Biden campaign released a new ad on Thursday attacking former President Donald Trump for allegedly 'siding with Putin,' labelling him a 'lapdog for a dictator.' The release is strategically timed to follow this week’s prominent NATO summit and is part of a $50 million media campaign leading up to the November election.

The ad criticises Trump for allowing Russia to act against NATO members that do not meet defence spending targets, calling him a 'dictator's lapdog' who promotes 'America first' rhetoric, as reported by The Hill.

“Democracy and American security are on the ballot this November, and President Biden is the only candidate in this race committed to protecting and promoting them at home and abroad,” the ad states.

“Donald Trump is an unstable, would-be dictator. If re-elected, he will become Putin's lapdog, jeopardising Europe's sovereignty and potentially sparking World War III,” Lauren Hitt, a spokesperson for Biden's campaign, said on Thursday, as reported by CNN.

The ad is released at a time when Biden faces a significant challenge to reassure Democrats and voters about his capability for the presidency following a poor debate performance against Trump.

President Joe Biden, amid a political crisis with questions about his campaign’s viability and mental fitness, will face a critical test on Thursday as he holds his first solo, unscripted news conference of the year and the first since his debate two weeks ago.

However, any missteps in this unscripted setting could heighten concerns, despite Biden's ongoing efforts to address his critics and his insistence on remaining in the race.

Many Democrats have stressed the need to see Biden handle questions confidently and without hesitation, a major concern following his debate performance against Trump.

Almost two weeks after the contentious debate, President Biden remains resolute about continuing his campaign despite growing doubts and cautious support from his party members.
