The FBI confirmed that the New Orleans attacker, who rammed into a crowd of New Year's revellers, was fully inspired by ISIS and acted alone. The individual had joined the ISIS terror group and carried out the attack in line with its ideology.
“We do not assess at this point that anyone else was involved in this attack except for Shamsud-Din Jabbar,” Christopher Raia, FBI deputy assistant director, said at a press conference.
FBI bomb technicians in New Orleans recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) placed by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the deadly crowd attack on Bourbon Street. The IEDs were placed hours before the attack, around 1 am or 2 am., with one found near Bourbon and Orleans Street and another two blocks away, according to FBI Counterterrorism Division Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia.

FBI officials revealed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was shot dead by police after the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, posted videos online claiming he had joined ISIS "before the summer" and discussed plans to harm his family. In his first video, Jabbar expressed concern that news coverage wouldn't focus on the "war between the believers and the disbelievers", prompting him to shift his focus. Authorities also recovered an ISIS flag from the truck Jabbar used to ram into a crowd.
FBI Unveils Detailed Timeline Of Shamsud-Din Jabbar's Deadly New Orleans Attack
FBI investigators revealed the timeline of Shamsud-Din Jabbar's movements leading up to the deadly attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day. Jabbar rented a Ford F-150 pickup truck in Houston on December 30, then drove to New Orleans on December 31. Surveillance footage and social media posts show him planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) between 1 am and 2 am on New Year's Day. Jabbar also posted videos on Facebook, revealing his ISIS affiliation and intentions.
“We did obtain surveillance footage showing Jabbar placing the devices where they were found,” the FBI’s deputy assistant director said.
At 3:15 am., he drove onto Bourbon Street, ran over pedestrians, and fired at officers before being shot dead. Investigators have recovered three phones and two laptops linked to Jabbar, which they are reviewing for further leads.
