In a groundbreaking milestone for the automotive and artificial intelligence industries, Tesla has completed what is believed to be the world’s first fully autonomous vehicle delivery. A Tesla Model Y drove itself from the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, directly to a customer’s home, without a single human inside or any remote operator controlling the car. The delivery, which marks a historic moment in autonomous driving, was completed a day ahead of schedule.
The fully self-driving Model Y navigated both city streets and highways at speeds reaching up to 72 miles per hour (115 km/h). The achievement was shared through a video, quickly going viral, and drew praise from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who took to X to congratulate his team.

There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.
In the comments section, Musk emphasized that no one was in the car and no remote intervention took place at any point during the journey, describing it as “FULLY autonomous.” He further stated, “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”
The customer who received the vehicle also posted online, to which Musk replied, “First time that a car has delivered itself to its owner!”
According to Tesla’s AI and Autopilot chief Ashok Elluswamy, the Model Y maintained highway speeds during the delivery and operated smoothly throughout, reinforcing Tesla’s long-standing vision of a future dominated by self-driving technology.
Tesla’s Robotaxi Program Takes Off
The news comes just days after Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin, providing limited rides to select influencers and investors using autonomous Model Ys. The program operates within a geofenced area of the city and is currently invite-only.
Earlier in the year, Musk teased both the robotaxi and autonomous delivery plans, stating Tesla aims to deploy millions of robotaxis in the coming years.

Musk later posted another message celebrating the broader implications of the launch, “Super congratulations to the @Tesla_AI software & chip design teams on a successful @Robotaxi launch!! Culmination of a decade of hard work.”
Tesla originally demonstrated self-driving capabilities earlier this year when it showed vehicles navigating the Texas factory premises without human drivers. Now, with public road deployment, the company has moved one step closer to reshaping modern transportation.
