As the infamous Annabelle doll makes its way to Lexington, Kentucky, for display at this year’s ScareFest, unease grips locals, and with good reason. The grandson of legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren has issued a chilling warning after a mysterious death linked to the doll during its recent tour.
The Annabelle doll, a seemingly innocent Raggedy Ann toy, was first tied to a series of eerie events in 1970. According to the Warrens, the doll was possessed by a demonic entity, capable of moving on its own, causing car crashes, and even stabbing a police officer. The couple locked it away in their Connecticut home, sealing it inside a glass case inscribed with a chilling message: “Warning: Positively Do Not Open.”
Now, decades later, the doll is back in the spotlight, and once again surrounded by controversy. It will be showcased at ScareFest 2025, part of the “Devils on the Run Tour,” at the Central Bank Center in Lexington from October 17–19.

A Death That Rekindled Fear
In July 2025, Dan Rivera, a former US Army veteran and paranormal investigator, was found dead in his Pennsylvania hotel room, just hours after finishing a tour featuring the Annabelle doll. His sudden death reignited fears surrounding the object’s supposed curse.
Following the incident, Chris McKinnell, Ed and Lorraine Warren’s grandson, sounded an alarm. “One of the worst parts of my grandparents’ legacy is that my grandfather ever made the mistake of calling it a museum,” McKinnell said on the Reel Appreciation podcast. “It was never open to the public. It was always by special invitation with strict rules, don’t touch anything, don’t be disrespectful, and don’t try to communicate with anything.”
McKinnell also criticised modern paranormal enthusiasts for commercialising the artifacts, calling it a “dangerous betrayal” of his grandparents’ principles. “People are now doing TikTok videos where they’re talking to these things,” he added.
