A routine Senate floor speech turned into a viral moment last week after Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana issued a bizarre warning about the alleged dangers of imported shrimp. The 73-year-old senator, known for his colorful turns of phrase, claimed that eating “radioactive” shrimp from abroad could cause Americans to “grow an extra ear” or even transform into an alien.
Standing beside a blown-up image of the menacing creature from the 1979 film Alien, Kennedy dramatized his concerns, insisting that lax inspections at US borders have allowed unsafe shrimp to reach consumers. “Shrimp from other countries, which don’t abide by the same rules that we abide by in America, if you eat it, it may turn you into the Alien, and at the minimum will cause you to grow an extra ear,” Kennedy told his Senate colleagues.
Though his comments drew laughter online, Kennedy’s underlying point is serious. Louisiana has a long history with the shrimping industry, but local shrimpers say they are struggling to compete with cheaper imports that, according to critics, are not held to the same safety and environmental standards. Kennedy described the situation as “unconscionable” and urged stricter federal oversight to protect both consumers and domestic shrimpers.

The senator’s remarks came shortly after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had detected low levels of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen shrimp imported from Indonesia. Officials emphasized that the contaminated shipment never entered U.S. markets. Moreover, the levels were far below federal safety limits and do not pose an immediate health risk. However, the FDA acknowledged that repeated long-term exposure to such contaminants could increase the risk of cancer.
FDA's Advisory
As a precaution, the FDA has advised consumers to discard recalled raw or cooked frozen shrimp sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand in 13 states. Retailers have been instructed not to sell or serve the affected products, while individuals concerned about potential exposure are encouraged to seek medical advice.
While Kennedy’s theatrical presentation of the issue sparked memes and jokes across social media, experts note that his comments reflect genuine anxieties about food safety and the economic survival of domestic fisheries. US shrimpers, particularly in Louisiana, argue that foreign competitors flood the market with cheaper products, undermining local livelihoods and raising quality concerns.
For now, health authorities stress that Americans face no widespread threat from radioactive shrimp. But Kennedy’s viral warning, complete with sci-fi imagery, has ensured that the debate over imported seafood safety, and the future of Louisiana’s shrimping industry, remains firmly in the public eye.
