A strange and spinning object in the night sky over the Hudson Valley left residents scratching their heads on the evening of November 4th, 2025. The sighting sparked curiosity, social media chatter, and even UFO speculation.

As the sun set earlier than usual that Tuesday evening, many locals reported witnessing a mysterious object moving and spinning across the sky. Around 6 PM, Hector Lopez, in Lake Katrine, captured footage of the object on camera. Its unusual motion and bright reflection caused some to wonder if extraterrestrial activity was underway.

The sighting was reported across multiple counties, including Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, and Putnam, with many residents describing it as an unusual light streaking across the horizon. Social media buzzed with posts claiming, “This is 100% a UFO.”

Meteorologists Provide An Explanation

CBS13 Chief Meteorologist Charlie Lopresti weighed in, offering a scientific explanation. According to Lopresti, the spinning light was likely the result of rocket fuel dumping in the cold upper atmosphere. As the fuel freezes, sunlight reflects off it, creating a dramatic, glowing display in the sky.

The trajectory and appearance of the object initially confused viewers, but experts quickly pointed to a much less mysterious source: human space activity, not aliens.

Unidentified Flying Object Identified

Space.com confirmed that the “UFO” was actually Europe’s powerful Ariane 6 rocket, launched earlier that day at 4:02 PM EST from Kourou, French Guiana. The European Space Agency (ESA) explained that the satellite aboard the rocket will capture high-resolution radar images of Earth, assisting ESA and its partners with scientific and environmental monitoring.

Ramon Torres, Project Manager for the ESA Sentinel-1 mission, celebrated the successful milestone, saying, “My team is delighted to complete this key milestone for this groundbreaking mission. It’s the culmination of many years of excellent work to ensure that Sentinel-1 will continue generating high-quality radar images and data responding to the key scientific questions and challenges we face today.”

While the Hudson Valley residents initially speculated about a UFO, the spinning object turned out to be a spectacular human-made phenomenon. The combination of frozen rocket fuel and reflected sunlight created an eye-catching, almost surreal display across the night sky.
