On the eve of New York City’s highly anticipated mayoral election, President Donald Trump shook the political landscape by announcing his support for independent candidate Andrew Cuomo on Truth Social. Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to progressive frontrunner Zohran Mamdani in June, is now attempting a late-stage surge in an already unpredictable three-way contest.

Voters across New York City head to the polls Tuesday to elect their next mayor in a race defined by ideological contrast: a progressive newcomer, an establishment veteran, and a conservative challenger all vying for control of America’s largest metropolitan government. Residents can locate their designated polling stations through the New York State Board of Elections’ online lookup portal by entering their name, date of birth, ZIP code, and county.

Mamdani Leads In Multiple Opinion Polls

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman from Queens, remains the polling favourite. A recent Marist College survey places him at 48 per cent, ahead of Cuomo’s 32 per cent and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa’s 16 per cent. An Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey shows similar numbers, with Mamdani at 50 per cent and Cuomo at 25 per cent.

Earlier polling suggested a tighter contest, such as a HarrisX survey conducted in July showing Mamdani leading by only three points. Since then, his support has grown steadily, especially among younger voters and immigrant communities frustrated with housing costs, transit inefficiencies, and policing controversies.

According to a RealClearPolitics average, Mamdani leads with 46.1 per cent, a 14-point advantage over Cuomo (31.8 per cent) and a 29-point margin over Sliwa (16.3 per cent).

What’s Driving The Progressive Surge?

Mamdani’s plans includes free city buses, municipal grocery stores to combat food insecurity, expanded rent controls, and free universal daycare. Endorsements from progressive figures such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have further energized grassroots volunteers.

Meanwhile, establishment figures like Cuomo have struggled to recapture momentum. Ranked-choice voting in the primary underscored the volatility of moderate support.

Challenges And Late Wildcards

An AtlasIntel survey conducted October 31 to November 2 painted a closer race, placing Mamdani just 4.5 points ahead. Analysts warn that borough-level turnout differences and last-minute developments could narrow the gap.

Trump’s endorsement, paired with support from billionaire Elon Musk, could rally conservative-leaning independents behind Cuomo. However, some strategists argue the move may alienate liberal Democrats.

Trump recently labelled Mamdani a “little communist,” but the assemblyman dismissed the remark as inflammatory rhetoric.

Voters must cast ballots at their assigned Election Day polling site. Early voting concluded Sunday, during which registered voters could vote at any approved location within their county.
