The US Department of Justice on Friday, January 31, released more than 800,000 pages of documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, marking what officials said would be the final disclosure. Like earlier releases, the files were heavily redacted and incomplete, limiting clarity despite their sheer volume.
Among the most debated records is an internal FBI email chain from August 2015 detailing unverified tips involving Epstein and high-profile figures, including US President Donald Trump. An official noted that “yellow highlighting is for the salacious piece,” indicating how graphic claims were categorised, even though many were secondhand and unsubstantiated.
Few Mentions Of Trump
While Trump was known to have social interactions with Epstein in the past, the newly released documents contain only limited references to him. Trump has never been accused by law enforcement of Epstein-related crimes and has denied all wrongdoing. One controversial file alleging rape of a minor briefly disappeared and then reappeared, triggering online backlash.
Prison Records, Maxwell Files, Death Details Included
The release also contains Epstein’s prison records, investigative files related to his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and documents detailing his incarceration and death. The Justice Department stressed that these are raw investigative materials and that inclusion does not imply guilt, with redactions made to protect victims and ongoing probes.
Celebrities Named, Musk Emails Draw Attention
Several prominent figures appear in the files, including former President Bill Clinton, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Kevin Spacey and filmmaker Mira Nair. Emails show Musk asking Epstein about visiting his private island and the “wildest party,” though there is no evidence he went there and Musk has denied wrongdoing.
