A horrifying mass stabbing occurred at the Union Gospel Mission men's shelter in downtown Salem, Oregon, on Sunday evening, causing at least 11 individuals to be injured. The Union Gospel Mission is a reputable shelter that offers meals, emergency shelter, and support services to those who are homeless. The shelter has yet to issue a statement about the incident. Salem Police have verified that a male suspect has been taken into custody. The attack took place at approximately 7:16 p.m. local time at the shelter in the 700 block of Commercial Street Northeast. Responders arrived shortly after multiple stabbings were reported at the scene. “Eleven victims were transported to Salem Health for medical treatment, each with varying types of injuries. Their status at present is unknown,” the Salem Police Department said in an official statement late Sunday night.

Police Investigation Ongoing, Commercial Street Closed
A heavy police presence was visible in the area shortly after the attack. Law enforcement officials confirmed that forensic officers are currently at the scene, conducting a thorough investigation. "Police activity downtown #SalemOregon continues. The suspect is in custody. Southbound Commercial Street NE at D Street NE is closed currently, with traffic detoured west," the Salem Police Department tweeted on X.

The authorities have called for people to stay out of the area until the investigation is ongoing. No motive has been published so far, and the suspect's name has not been disclosed. Police have avoided releasing additional information, stating the investigation is ongoing.
