Texas bans Sharia law: Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the enforcement of Islamic Sharia law will not be allowed in the state, days after a video of a Muslim cleric in Houston went viral. The cleric was seen addressing shopkeepers through a loudspeaker, asking them not to sell alcohol, pork, or lottery tickets. Abbott described the incident as “harassment” and urged Texans to report any attempt to impose “Sharia compliance” on businesses or individuals.

In a post on social media platform X, dated September 9, the Republican governor wrote: “I signed laws that BAN Sharia Law and Sharia Compounds in Texas. No business & no individual should fear fools like this.” He further added that if anyone tries to impose religious rules on others, people should report the matter immediately to local law enforcement or the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Muslim Advocacy Groups Hit Back

Although Abbott referred to a ban, Texas does not have a separate law that formally prohibits Sharia. Instead, the state enforces the 2017 American Laws for American Courts bill, which prevents judges from applying foreign or religious codes—including Sharia—if they conflict with US or Texas law. This legislation was passed amid debates on cultural integration and immigration, with supporters arguing it safeguards constitutional rights.

The governor’s latest remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Muslim organizations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) accused Abbott of misleading the public, clarifying that Sharia largely guides personal religious practice such as prayer, fasting, and dietary rules, and does not override US civil law. Community leaders warned that Abbott’s rhetoric risks fueling Islamophobia and stigmatizing ordinary Muslims in Texas.

Controversy Over EPIC City project

Earlier this year, Abbott opposed the East Plano Islamic Center’s EPIC City project, a proposed 400-acre residential and commercial hub that included homes, schools, a mosque, and retail outlets. He raised concerns that it could turn into a “Sharia zone” and directed multiple state agencies to review the plan. Netizens dismissed these claims as exaggerated, accusing the governor of religious profiling and targeting Muslim communities for political gain.
