President Donald Trump has appointed Jeanine Pirro, a former television host and senior legal commentator, as the interim US Attorney for the District of Columbia in a sweeping reorganization of the US Department of Justice. The action follows the withdrawal of the nomination of Ed Martin in the face of bipartisan complaints about his partisan conduct and lack of experience in prosecution. Pirro, who is 73, is leaving her co-host position on Fox News' "The Five," a tenure with the network spanning 14 years. Trump commended Pirro as a "tough crusader for crime victims," referencing her previous service as a judge and district attorney in Westchester County, New York.
Ed Martin, the acting US Attorney since January 20, 2025, faced mounting criticism for his support of January 6 Capitol rioters and his controversial activities in the Justice Department, including the dismissal of prosecutors handling riot-related cases. Senator Thom Tillis, a leading Republican, openly opposed Martin's confirmation because of concerns regarding his partisan behavior. Since his withdrawal of nomination, Martin has been reassigned in the Justice Department to work as Associate Deputy Attorney General and Director of the newly established "Weaponisation Working Group" to investigate alleged government abuses during the Biden administration.

She was the first woman to be appointed as the Westchester County Court judge in 1990 and the first woman to be appointed as the district attorney of Westchester County in 1993.
