US President Donald Trump has extended an olive branch to Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, hinting at a possible reconciliation following weeks of highly publicized hostility between the two influential figures. In a pre-recorded podcast interview with the New York Post aired on Wednesday, Trump said he bore “no hard feelings” toward Musk despite their recent fallout.
“I don’t blame him for anything, but I was a little disappointed,” Trump remarked, adding, “I guess I could [forgive him]. My sole function now is getting this country back to a level higher than it’s ever been.”
Musk Issues Public Apology
The apparent thaw in relations comes after Musk, early Wednesday morning, posted a public apology on X, “I regret some of my posts about President [Trump] last week. They went too far.” His conciliatory message followed a barrage of harsh criticisms in recent weeks, including incendiary claims linking Trump to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Musk had accused Trump of hiding Epstein-related documents, suggesting that the former president was "in" the files. The White House swiftly condemned the claim as an “unfortunate episode.”
From Allies To Adversaries
The rift between Trump and Musk, once political allies, widened when Musk harshly criticized Trump’s legislative centerpiece, the “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” Trump, clearly upset, responded in the podcast, “It’s the best thing we’ve ever signed in this country. When he did that, I was not a happy camper.”
Trump further said in a separate NBC News interview over the weekend that he had no desire to mend ties with Musk. “I’m too busy doing other things. I have no intention of speaking to him,” he stated, also accusing Musk of being “disrespectful to the office of the president.”
Hope For Reconciliation?
Despite this, sources close to Musk told Reuters that the tech mogul’s anger was cooling, and he might be open to repairing ties with Trump. Musk’s father, Errol Musk, downplayed the feud, attributing it to both men being “tired and stressed.”
Musk, who played a key role in supporting Trump’s reelection campaign and spent millions backing his return to the White House, now finds himself seeking to restore a relationship that once symbolised the convergence of business and politics.
