US Elections 2024: Former United States (US) President Donald Trump clinched a resounding victory in Nevada's Republican caucuses as he was the only major candidate to compete.

Trump’s victory in Nevada gives him all 26 of the state's delegates. The former US president reportedly needs 1,215 delegates to formally secure the party's nomination and could reach that threshold in March.

Republican party candidate and former US Ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump’s major rival standing in the race, did not attend the caucuses, even though they are the only contest in Nevada that counts toward the GOP nomination.

Haley cited an ‘unfair process’ that favoured Trump and competed in Nevada's symbolic state-run presidential primary on Tuesday, finishing behind the "none of these candidates" option.

After the results were announced, Trump said, "I want to thank you all. We had a tremendous victory. We expected to win, but we didn't expect to win by that much. You are incredible people I will never forget.”

Trump’s resounding victory aligns with the strategic push by his supporters in Nevada, proving his enduring power among Republicans in the state. The victory allows Trump to secure delegates and gain momentum as attention goes to the forthcoming South Carolina primary on February 24, where he will face another battle from Haley.

Trump supporters waited in enormous lines on Thursday. Twenty minutes after the caucuses began at one Reno-area primary school, a queue of over 1,000 people stretched around the corner and down the street.

Haley, who served as Trump's UN ambassador and is now his sole opponent for the Republican nomination, earlier pledged to take that race to South Carolina, which votes on Feb. 24, and beyond. In a speech to supporters in South Carolina, Haley said US voters deserved a better option than a Biden-Trump rematch, "and we're going to give it to them."
