The next US presidential election may still be few years away, but political speculation online is already in full swing. In one of the most surprising developments, social media users, particularly within MAGA circles, have begun pairing Vice-President JD Vance with Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney under the viral slogan “Vance-Sweeney 2028.”

What started as scattered memes on X has quickly morphed into a trending conversation. Commentator Benny Johnson amplified the buzz by declaring, “Sydney Sweeney proved she has more balls than most politicians in DC, and that’s why people are tweeting today, Vance-Sweeney 2028.” As users continued posting mock campaign posters and humorous endorsements, the phrase gained momentum, fueled by the unlikely fusion of politics and pop culture.

The American Eagle Ad Controversy

The trend also intersects with the recent debate surrounding Sweeney’s viral American Eagle jeans advertisement. The campaign’s playful tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”, unintentionally ignited a political firestorm, as some progressive critics argued it evoked themes of whiteness, beauty standards, and even eugenics. The backlash pulled Sweeney into the center of cultural tensions she had never publicly engaged with before.

In a GQ interview promoting her new film Christy, the actress acknowledged the whirlwind, noting how surreal it felt to have both President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance publicly defend her. Vance previously joked on the “Ruthless” podcast, “My political advice to Democrats is: continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi,” framing the controversy as another example of online polarization.

How “Ticket” Took Off

Conservative commentator Michael Knowles helped catalyse the mock-campaign momentum when he appeared on Megyn Kelly’s show, praising Sweeney as “the new spokesman for the American right” and jokingly endorsing a Vance-Sweeney 2028 ticket. Memes quickly followed, turning satire into trending speculation.

Despite the noise, there is no confirmed plan for a collaboration, or candidacy, from either figure. Sweeney, a registered Republican, has expressed no interest in entering politics and remains focused on her growing Hollywood career. After Christy (released November 7) and her December film The Housemaid, she is scheduled to work on Man From Rio and Scandalous.
