WWE Smackdown Results & Highlights, September 5: WWE SmackDown Results: Brock Lesnar has made his return to the action and made a shocking interference in the United States Championship match between John Cena and Sami Zayn at the WWE SmackDown on Friday.

The September 5 episode of SmackDown aired from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Multiple big names, including John Cena, CM Punk, Tiffany Stratton, and Randy Orton, were advertised for the show.

Lesnar attacked Cena, who was heading towards a victory by pinning Zayn. The Beast Incarnate took the referee out of the ring, breaking the count, then climbed inside to wreak havoc. Lesnar delivered an F5 to Zayn, followed by two devastating F5s to Cena, leaving both men struggling. With Cena laid out, Zayn was able to retain the United States Championship.

This was Lesnar's another targeted campaign against Cena, having also attacked the veteran at SummerSlam on August 3, when he dominated the 17-time world champion after his loss to Cody Rhodes.

This was the final SmackDown appearance for John Cena, as there are only seven dates left on his farewell tour, with all of them being on PLEs, Raw and SNME. On the other hand, this was Lesnar's first WWE television appearance since 2023 and his second since August 3, when he initially reignited his rivalry with Cena at SummerSlam.

The recent extended battle between Cena and Lesnar has led to a high-profile clash of the two superstars for one final time at Wrestlepalooza on September 20.


AJ Lee returns

In the main event of WWE SmackDown, Seth Rollins introduced his wife and Women's Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch. As soon as Becky arrived in the ring, loud boos were heard, and huge chants of AJ Lee broke out as the entire crowd anticipated the much-awaited return.

While Becky was addressing the crowd, CM Punk made his way out, and the entire arena was on its feet.

While Punk was having a verbal go at Rollins and Lynch, AJ Lee made her way out, returning to the WWE ring after 3800 days. She ended up attacking Lynch, leaving her and her husband Rollins rattled. Her last appearance was a decade ago. Earlier this week, CM Punk confirmed that he would be appearing on SmackDown.
