On Thursday, US President Donald Trump signed legislation to rescind nearly 9 billion Dollars in previously approved federal funding. The cuts primarily target foreign aid programs and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports national outlets like NPR and PBS, as well as over 1,500 local stations. The decision follows weeks of partisan debate, with Republicans in both the House and Senate approving Trump’s rescission request, and Democrats unanimously opposing the move.
Where The Cuts Hit The Hardest
According to the bill and analysis by Congressional Budget Office officials, the majority of the rescinded funds were designated for foreign assistance programs, impacting global health, humanitarian relief, and development aid. The CPB, which plays a vital role in funding non-commercial public radio and television, also took a significant hit. About 1.1 billion Dollars earmarked for the organization was rolled back, despite concerns from lawmakers about the implications for rural and underserved communities that rely on public media.

Some Republicans were uncomfortable with the cuts but supported them rather than cross Trump or his agenda. Democrats unanimously opposed the cuts but were powerless to stop them.
Trump Visits Federal Reserve, Targets Powell
Also on Thursday, Trump made a surprise visit to Federal Reserve headquarters in Washington, just days after suggesting that Fed Chair Jerome Powell could be fired over his handling of a costly renovation project at two Fed buildings. Though the visit was unannounced, it raised eyebrows given Trump’s past criticism of Powell during his presidency. The potential tension may signal an attempt by Trump to reassert influence over the central bank if elected again in 2024.

Later that evening, Trump used his Truth Social platform to issue a full-throated endorsement of Michael Whatley, current North Carolina GOP chair, for a potential US Senate run. “Mike would make an unbelievable Senator from North Carolina,” Trump posted. "So, should Michael Whatley run for the Senate, please let this notification represent my Complete and Total Endorsement,” Trump added.
