The New Year in the United States began with a horrific series of events that shook the nation and the world. Deadly attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas left many dead and injured, prompting widespread shock and grief. While the preliminary investigations suggested no connection between the two incidents, a series of startling revelations have emerged, forcing authorities to reconsider their stance.
Both events, Shamsud Din Jabbar’s deadly pickup truck attack on Bourbon Street, New Orleans, that left 15 dead, and Matthew Livelsberger’s explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas are now being looked at through a different lens by investigators. What was once considered a case of random violence or isolated attacks is now being treated as potentially connected terrorism.
The Turo app, often referred to as the ‘Airbnb for cars’ is an emerging link in the recent attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas. This app allows users to rent vehicles directly from car owners, bypassing traditional rental companies. With Turo, renters can access a wide variety of vehicles, from luxury cars to everyday sedans, offering more flexible and personalised options than conventional car rental agencies.
In the case of the recent attack in New Orleans, authorities revealed that the suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had rented the pickup truck used in the deadly assault through Turo. According to the FBI, the vehicle was equipped with multiple suspected explosive devices and an ISIS flag, making it a significant element in the investigation. The suspect, who was killed in a shootout with police, used the truck to ram into a crowd of New Year revellers, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and dozens of injuries.
Turo App Under Scrutiny
The app has raised concerns about potential misuse, given that it operates as a peer-to-peer service. While Turo facilitates rentals with minimal verification, the situation in New Orleans has prompted questions about the app’s security measures and the potential for its misuse by individuals with violent intentions.
Following the New Orleans attack, reports surfaced linking Turo to a subsequent explosion involving a Tesla Cybertruck near a Donald Trump-owned hotel in Las Vegas. Although no direct connections have been confirmed, both incidents have raised alarms about the app’s potential role in facilitating criminal activities. Turo's response to these developments and its plans to address security concerns will be closely watched in the coming weeks.
