Walmart McDonald’s boycott August 2025:  A nationwide boycott of Walmart and McDonald’s has officially kicked off across the United States on August 1, as announced by the People’s Union USA. The month-long boycott is part of an extended campaign against corporate misconduct, such as bad labor practices, tax avoidance, and the dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies. The protest, described as a form of consumer activism, urges Americans to stop shopping at Walmart and avoid eating at McDonald’s for August. Instead, the group has called on the public to support small, independent businesses as a show of solidarity.

Why Are Americans Boycotting Walmart and McDonald's?

According to John Schwarz, founder of People’s Union USA, the boycott stems from growing concerns about worker exploitation and corporate irresponsibility. In a viral Instagram post, Schwarz accused Walmart of underpaying employees and evading taxes. “Walmart represents everything wrong with unchecked corporate power,” Schwarz stated. McDonald's itself is under fire for supposedly scaling back DEI initiatives and being a lobbyist against minimum wage increases. The fast-food chain has also been accused of evading taxes.

The People’s Union USA, established by John Schwarz, with a combined social media following of nearly 900,000, and the association is becoming one of the "go-to" voices for grassroots consumer activism. People's Union USA's purpose is to reclaim power for ordinary Americans by using economic force against corporations. “We are not a political party. We are not a protest. We are a movement of people organizing to take back control of our economy, government, and future,” the group said in a statement.

The organization is not stopping with Walmart and McDonald’s. A boycott of Lowe’s is also scheduled this August, followed by targeted actions against Amazon, Uber, and PepsiCo in September. Schwarz described how the campaign is not just symbolic but rather to call for fair taxation, an end to price gouging, and greater worker protection. The organization already organised 24-hour economic blackouts and coordinated protests against big corporations like Target and Amazon.

Growing Discontent with Corporate Practices

This boycott is set against the trend of growing consumer activism following President Donald Trump's re-election in January. Progressive groups have been outspoken critics of large companies retracting their DEI pledges and not addressing workers' rights. McDonald's has already faced boycott calls from the international Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement since 2023. The firm's recent departure from DEI pledges only fueled domestic criticism. The People's Union USA is calling on Americans to shift their consumer spending into local, family-owned stores during August. "Let them feel it. Let them hear us," Schwarz wrote, calling for people-empowered change in corporate America.

With increasing social media momentum and worldwide outrage over corporate morality, this boycott could be the harbinger of a fresh wave of consumer-driven activism in America. Whether it leads to concrete policy or business reforms is yet to be seen.
