In candid remarks to Vanity Fair, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles offered a striking character assessment of President Donald Trump, describing him as having “an alcoholic’s personality” despite being a teetotaller. “He operates [with] a view that there’s nothing he can’t do. Nothing, zero, nothing,” she said, referring to his intensely possessive and compulsive approach to power.

Trump appeared unbothered by the description, telling the New York Post that although he does not drink, he has often said he would “have a very good chance of being an alcoholic” if he did. Praising Wiles, whom he once nicknamed the “Ice Maiden,” Trump said she had “done a fantastic job,” reinforcing her status as the most influential figure in his West Wing.

Score-Settling And 90-Day ‘Understanding’

Wiles acknowledged that Trump remains driven by a desire for payback against political rivals and officials involved in investigations following his first term. She revealed a “loose agreement” with the president that such score-settling would end within the first 90 days of his second term, though she later expressed doubts about whether that restraint would last.

“I don’t think he’s on a retribution tour,” she said, adding that Trump believes people who “did bad things” should not remain in government, even if the actions appear retaliatory.

JD Vance: From Trump Critic To ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ Ally

Wiles was equally blunt about Vice-President JD Vance, calling him “a conspiracy theorist for decades.” She suggested his transformation from a vocal Trump critic to a loyal ally was largely political, coinciding with his ambitions during his Senate campaign. 

Tech billionaire Elon Musk drew some of Wiles’ sharpest criticism. She described him as “an odd, odd duck,” adding that he is “an avowed ketamine user” and implying that some of his erratic online behaviour coincided with drug use.

USAID Dismantling Left Wiles ‘Aghast’

Wiles said she was “aghast” at Musk’s role in dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development. “Anybody who has paid attention to U.S.A.I.D. knows they do very good work,” she said, questioning the wisdom of weakening the agency.

Pam Bondi ‘Whiffed’ On Epstein Files

Attorney General Pam Bondi, a close friend of Wiles, was criticised over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Wiles accused her of failing to grasp the issue’s importance to Trump’s base and distributing binders to conservative influencers that contained “nothingness,” while making misleading claims about a supposed client list.

Russell Vought Called A ‘Right-Wing Absolute Zealot’

Wiles also labelled White House budget director Russell Vought, a key architect of Project 2025, as “a right-wing absolute zealot,” signalling unease over ideological extremism within the administration.

White House Pushback On Vanity Fair Profile

The White House has rejected the Vanity Fair profile as misleading, with Trump accusing the reporter of deceiving Wiles. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also defended Wiles as Trump’s most loyal adviser.
