In a major security lapse at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow, immigration officials detained an Afghan national attempting to board an international flight using a fake Indian passport. The incident took place on Sunday, May 19, when the man, later identified as Jandullah (alias Rehan), was preparing to fly to Sharjah on an IndiGo flight.
Initially identifying himself as 'Rehan' from Bihar, the individual’s accent and speech patterns immediately raised suspicion with immigration officer Vidya Ram Shukla. Trusting his instincts, Shukla conducted a more thorough check of the traveller’s documents.
Further scrutiny revealed that all the Indian identity documents the suspect carried including his Aadhaar card, PAN card, and passport had been issued post-2020. However, immigration records showed he had originally entered India in 2019 on a six-day medical visa, which clearly didn’t match his current documentation.
Faced with intense questioning, the man eventually admitted his real name was Jandullah and that he hailed from Chakan village in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. He confessed to having stayed illegally in India for several years and obtaining forged Indian documents to establish a false identity.
Investigators uncovered more details about his life in India after arriving for medical treatment, Jandullah decided to stay back illegally. He lived with his brother and even took part in a family wedding, blending into local society. However, within a week, his suspicious behaviour prompted further scrutiny, eventually leading to his confession.

Following his confession, immigration authorities immediately alerted local police and intelligence units. He has now been placed in judicial custody as preliminary investigations continue.
Security and intelligence agencies are tracking his movements across various cities during his prolonged illegal stay. A senior intelligence official, speaking anonymously, described the case as a serious security failure, noting that the suspect managed to remain undetected for nearly five years using fake credentials.
Police are now seeking custodial remand to extract further details, as the probe may uncover a wider network involved in illegal immigration and document forgery.
