A video of a young woman from the Shahganj area burning the Manusmriti went viral on social media on Tuesday. The police have registered a case and arrested the accused woman. Following a court order, she has been sent to jail. The video is reportedly three years old.

Reposted on Personal Account Priyanka Varun, a resident of Nagla Fakirchand in the Shahganj area, is the National President of the Bharatiya Mahila Suraksha Sangh. On December 26, Priyanka uploaded a video to Instagram in which she is seen burning the Manusmriti. The caption accompanying the video read, "Best wishes on Manusmriti Dahan (burning)." She also took a screenshot of this Instagram post and shared it on X. By Monday, the post had circulated widely across social media platforms.

Demand For Action From Police Commissioner

Taking cognizance of the post, office bearers of the Hindu Raksha Dal—including Kuldeep Pathak, Namrata Singh, Bhaiya Tiwari, Vinay Pandit, and Akash—shared the image on X and demanded action from Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar. The police's social media cell identified the content as intended to hurt religious sentiments and alerted the Shahganj police station.

Legal Action and Arrest On the instructions of ACP (Lohamandi) Gaurav Kumar, an FIR was registered at the Shahganj police station on Tuesday, following which Priyanka Varun was arrested. She was presented before the court, which remanded her to judicial custody for 14 days.
