The trauma center in UP’s Bahraich city is set to begin operations from Monday after an eight-year delay. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) has assigned 27 medical personnel, including surgeons and orthopedic surgeons, to the centre. District Health Information Officer, Brijesh Singh, confirmed that the government had issued directives to operationalise the trauma centre.
The Chandpura facility was completed eight years ago but remained non-functional due to staff transfers and deployment issues. Despite repeated appeals to authorities, the health department took no action.
Advocate Syed Akram Azad, director of Asra The Supporting Hand Foundation, filed a PIL in the Lucknow High Court, highlighting the problems caused by the non-operational trauma center and naming government and health department officials as parties. The court ordered the health department to operationalise the center on April 24.
Following a meeting on April 25, CMO Dr Sanjay Kumar Sharma was directed to make the trauma center operational and submit a report. On April 26, the CMO deployed 27 medical personnel, including orthopedic surgeons, surgeons, and three emergency medical officers, instructing them to begin duty on Monday.
The operational trauma center is expected to serve patients from Devipatan division and Nepal. The CMO has also instructed that the April salaries of all deployed staff will be paid only after they join the trauma centre. Deputy CMO Dr. Anurag Verma has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee this process.
