Bhagya Laxmi Yojana: The Centre and state governments have initiated several social welfare schemes to support economically vulnerable and poor families with expenses related to their daughters’ education and marriage. The Uttar Pradesh government’s Bhagya Laxmi Yojana is one of these schemes, offering financial assistance to families below the poverty line (BPL) in an effort to secure the social and economic future of girls in India.

The Bhagya Laxmi Yojana aims to alleviate the financial stress of BPL families by providing a bond of  Rs 50,000 at the time of girl child's birth. The bond matures to Rs 2 lakh when the girl turns 21-years-old, with a condition that she is not married before the age of 18. In addition, the scheme offers staggered educational assistance totalling Rs 23,000, disbursed as the daughter progresses through her schooling - Rs 3,000 in sixth grade, Rs 5,000 in eighth grade, Rs 7,000 in tenth grade, and Rs 8,000 in twelfth grade.

Bhagya Laxmi Scheme Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Bhagya Laxmi Yojana, applicants must be permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh and belong to a BPL family. The scheme is available to all girls born in BPL families after March 31, 2006, with a limit of two daughters per family being able to benefit from the scheme.
