The Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun has become the centre of a fresh controversy after some individuals claimed that the mosque was built over Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. This follows similar disputes surrounding the Ajmer Dargah in Rajasthan and the Jama Masjid in Sambhal. The case is scheduled for a hearing on December 3, intensifying political and communal tensions.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi responded to the developments, noting that the Jama Masjid in Badaun is the latest target of such claims. He stated that the case, filed in 2022, involves both the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Uttar Pradesh government as parties under the 1991 Places of Worship Act.
Assaduddin Owaisi criticised Hindutva organisations, calling for their prohibition to preserve India’s peace and unity. He warned that failure to maintain communal harmony could leave future generations focused on archaeological excavations instead of technological advancements like artificial intelligence.

According to reports, Saturday's hearing allowed the Muslim side to present its arguments after the Hindu side’s case had been previously heard. With both parties presenting their views, the court adjourned until December 3, when further deliberations will take place.
The controversy has heightened sensitivity following recent communal violence in Sambhal, further straining relations in the region. Tensions in Sambhal had been simmering since the local court ordered a survey of the mosque on November 19. Opposing the court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid, people clashed with police, resulting in the deaths of four persons. The survey followed a petition filed by some persons in the local court, claiming that the site of the mosque was previously a Harihar temple.
