Ghaziabad is set to become the first city in the state to microchip stray dogs as part of efforts to control their growing population. The Municipal Corporation has issued tenders and will soon complete the process to implement the scheme.

The microchip will help authorities track whether a stray dog has been sterilised and when it received its vaccinations. It will also allow the corporation to create an accurate databank of stray dogs, providing details on the number of sterilised and unsterilised dogs in the city.

Deputy Chief Veterinary and Welfare Officer Dr Anuj explained that no surgery will be required. The chip will be injected via a simple procedure, allowing Municipal Corporation staff to administer it directly in societies and other areas without bringing dogs to the ABC Centre.

The chip will connect to a scanning device, displaying the dog’s full information, including vaccination history and sterilisation status.

This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Mission 2030 goal of zero deaths from rabies caused by stray dog bites. By ensuring timely vaccinations, the city hopes to reduce the risk of rabies and improve public safety, said Vikramaditya Singh Malik, Municipal Commissioner.
