The foot overbridge (FOB) built to connect the Namo Bharat station with the metro station at the New Bus Stand has been opened without a travelator having been installed. The New Bus Stand in Ghaziabad is extremely crowded and has heavy traffic. Crossing the road here is difficult for people. With the FOB now open, passengers will no longer have to go down to the road to catch the metro from the Namo Bharat station.
Passenger Safety And Convenience Issues
A large number of people travel from the Namo Bharat train to the metro station. To do so, they previously had to come onto the road to catch the metro, risking their lives crossing the road. In view of the difficulties faced by passengers, the FOB has been opened without the travelator. However, people say that the opening of the FOB without a travelator has not been of much benefit to them.
Travelator Installation Timeline And Features
The NCRTC had previously claimed that the FOB would be opened only after the travelator was installed. The bridge is now complete, but the travelator has not yet been fitted. Puneet Vats, CPRO of the NCRTC, stated that work on installing the travelator is ongoing and will be completed in six months. Even with the bridge open, work on the travelator will continue at night.
Once operational, passengers will reach the metro station by standing on the travelator. A travelator on an FOB allows people to get from one end to the other safely, in less time, and without significant fatigue. It is particularly beneficial for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, those travelling with heavy luggage, and passengers who are unwell. It resembles a conveyor belt that moves slowly, powered by a motor.
Project Details: Multi-Modal Integration
The Namo Bharat station is being connected to the Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda metro station via the FOB as part of a multi-modal integration plan for the entry-exit points. The FOB is approximately 300 metres long and 6.5 metres wide. The travelator is typically electrically powered and includes safety features such as handrails, emergency stop buttons, and an anti-slip surface. The travelator will ease travel for women, the elderly, and children.
