A heavy downpour on Tuesday evening overwhelmed the city's drainage system, leading to severe waterlogging on major thoroughfares, inundating numerous residential colonies, and causing widespread power outages. The rainfall, which intensified after 5 pm during peak rush hour, stranded commuters and laid bare the inadequacies of the Municipal Corporation's monsoon preparedness.

Widespread Waterlogging And Drainage Collapse

Major arterial roads, including GT Road, Hapur Road, Delhi-Meerut Road, Ramte Ram Road, and Ambedkar Road, were submerged, bringing traffic to a standstill. Ramte Ram Road was under at least one foot of water, and several sections of NH-9 also experienced significant waterlogging.

The city's drains were unable to cope with the deluge, overflowing in most colonies. In Vijay Nagar, residents reported that water from the drains was flowing backwards, pushing sewage and waste onto the streets.

The waterlogging affected a vast number of colonies across the city, including: RDC Rajnagar, Deendayalpur, Nehru Nagar, Shibbanpura, Patel Nagar, Kalka Garhi, Ghukna, Hindan Vihar, Mukund Nagar, Daulatpura, Nandgram, Sihani, Krishna Nagar, Nasirpur, Mariam Nagar, Noornagar, Arya Nagar, Kotgaon, Lohia Nagar, Turab Nagar, Islam Nagar, Kaila Bhatta, Prem Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Raispur, ChiranjeevVihar, Govindpuram, Sanjay Nagar, Raj Nagar, Kavi Nagar, Bagu, Siddharth Vihar, Vijay Nagar, and Pratap Vihar Colony.

When residents contacted Municipal Corporation officials to complain, they were given assurances that pumps would be deployed to clear the water.

Commuters And Residents Face Hardship

The timing of the rain caused maximum disruption for commuters returning from work. With a reduced number of buses and auto-rickshaws on the roads, many were left stranded. Crowds of people were seen searching for auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws late into the night, while some were forced to walk home through the inundated streets.

Residents of housing societies faced a different set of problems. Basements in numerous societies across Rajnagar Extension, Siddharth Vihar, NH-9, Lal Kuan, and Govindpuram were flooded. The basement of the Officer City society was completely waterlogged. As most societies use their basements for parking, the flooding created significant difficulties for residents trying to park or retrieve their vehicles and raised concerns about potential damage to the buildings' foundations.

The impact was also felt in surrounding areas like Mussoorie and Dasna, which also experienced power cuts during the rain.

In Dasna, the main drain overflowed, and the road connecting from NH-9 was flooded. The road from NH-9 to Rafikabad was also waterlogged.

In Mussoorie, the service lane of NH-9 was submerged under one to one-and-a-half feet of water, and the road leading to Dhaulana was flooded in several places.
