The Gorakhpur AIIMS administration has introduced a major patient-friendly initiative by making commonly prescribed blood and urine tests free of cost. These include tests for diabetes, kidney and liver function, and uric acid, earlier priced up to Rs 200. Rates for tests costing above Rs 200 will also be reduced, with a revised list currently under preparation.
Beginning December 10, all blood and urine tests will be conducted in-house by AIIMS pathologists. Following this transition, private agency Hind Lab, which has been handling diagnostic tests since AIIMS became operational, will discontinue its testing services and focus solely on other diagnostic functions.

Executive Director Major General (Retd) Dr Vibha Dutta ensured the installation of required machines and reagents, enabling the AIIMS lab to launch 109 types of biochemistry tests. Hind Lab will conduct the remaining tests only till December 9.
The shift to in-house testing is expected to significantly benefit patients as well as medical students. Students will gain practical exposure to blood investigations, while patients will receive more reliable and affordable diagnostic services. The arrangement also ensures direct supervision by the AIIMS administration, improving accountability and quality control.

Patients have welcomed the move, noting that reduced costs and improved facilities provide major relief, especially in a premier medical institution. AIIMS had earlier reduced registration fees and extended validity, further easing the financial burden on families.
“From December 10, all tests will be conducted at AIIMS itself. This will reduce the financial burden on patients, and with excellent treatment, they will recover more quickly,” said Dr Vibha Dutta.
