In a major infrastructure initiative, a Y-shaped road overbridge is set to be constructed at the Gorakhpur Cantt railway crossing to reduce traffic congestion and improve access for rail passengers. The railway administration has finalised the design, and construction will begin once the plan receives official approval.
The overbridge aims to ease travel for residents of several localities, including Nandangar, Jharna Tola, Lalganj, Gayatrinagar, Unchwa, and Dargahia, as well as passengers using Gorakhpur Cantt station. The project will prevent passengers from missing trains and reduce waiting times at the railway crossing.
Earlier, an L-shaped bridge had been proposed, but it was found to create difficulties for residents and increase accident risks. The new Y-shaped design will ensure smoother movement for both commuters and locals.
The bridge, measuring approximately 674 metres in length and 17 metres in width, will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 69 crore. Construction will involve 26 pillars on both sides of the railway crossing and extend from the far end of the Army Public School to the Cantt station. One arm of the Y will run from south to north towards Neenathapa Inter College, facilitating better passenger access.
Despite Cantt station being developed as a terminal, the lack of proper access has limited passenger footfall, with many travellers missing trains due to delays at the crossing. The railway plans to operate passenger, DEMU, and MEMU trains on the Narkatiaganj, Chhapra, and Varanasi routes from the Cantt station, and the new bridge is expected to boost accessibility.
In addition, a second entry to Cantt station is planned on the south side, similar to Gorakhpur station. Land has been identified, and the railway administration has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for its construction. This will allow passengers to reach the AIIMS gate directly without crossing railway lines, reducing travel time significantly.
“The construction of this road overbridge will improve safety, enhance train operations, and provide relief to road users,” said Pankaj Kumar Singh, Chief Public Relations Officer, North Eastern Railway.
The tender process for both the overbridge and the second entry will commence as soon as approvals are granted.
