The Municipal Corporation has started work on a major project to provide relief to people from the annual problem of waterlogging in three wards of the city. A 12.36-kilometre-long RCC drain will be built from Gulriha police station to Chilua Tal at a cost of Rs 107 crore.
This drain will be constructed under the Urban Flood and Storm Water Drainage scheme, launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The construction has been entrusted to Unit-42 of Construction and Design Services.
Project Details And Route
Origin: Gulriha police station (Ward No. 30)
Destination: Chilua Tal
Route: The drain will pass through KanchanpurChauraha, PurainaPuliya, BajrahaPuliya, Mirzapur, 10 Number Boring, and the ABC Centre.
Impact: Once completed, more than 50,000 people in this area will get permanent relief from waterlogging.
Technical Specifications And Method
According to Municipal Corporation officials, this drain will have a capacity of 3,200 MLD (million litres per day), which will allow rainwater and sewage from homes and lanes to flow easily.
During the drain's construction, all branch drains from the localities it passes through will be connected to the main drain to ensure a smooth flow of water. Additionally, the level (height and depth) of the drain will be scientifically determined to prevent any waterlogging in the future.
Future Expansion
Drainage from Rapti Township and Sports City can also be connected
The Municipal Corporation is also planning to connect this project with the Gorakhpur Development Authority's Rapti Township and Sports City projects, so that the drainage from these areas can also flow through this line. For this, an NOC (No Objection Certificate) will be obtained from the Irrigation Department.
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Singh Sogarwal, linking this project to the city's long-term needs, has given strict instructions to all implementing agencies to decide the drain's section and capacity design with mutual coordination. He stated that during the drain's construction, the current waterlogging situation, as well as the future population and potential water flow, should be taken into account.

Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Singh Sogarwal said, "This RCC drain project by the Municipal Corporation will not only provide relief to areas like Gulriha, Mirzapur, Puraina, and Bajraha, but will also control waterlogging in the Chilua Tal area in the future. Once the project is completed, the drainage system in the northern part of the city will be further strengthened. The problem of waterlogging on main roads and in localities during the monsoon will be eliminated".
