The police successfully foiled a major conspiracy to commit theft, robbery and dacoity targeting the heavy crowds at the boating area (Ramgarhtal) and local markets on New Year's Day. In a joint operation by the Ramgarhtal and Cantt police stations, a total of 40 accused—including 34 women—were apprehended in the nick of time.
Tools used for committing crimes, fake animals used to create fear, and a four-wheeler were recovered from their possession. On Friday afternoon, they were presented in court and subsequently sent to jail.
The Operation
According to the police, vigilance had already been heightened in view of the increasing crowds at the boating area for New Year celebrations. Acting on information regarding suspicious activities, the police cordoned off the area and apprehended the gang. Interrogation revealed that all the accused had gathered in Gorakhpur from various districts with an organized plan to target women by taking advantage of the heavy rush.
A case has been registered against the accused for planning dacoity and under the Arms Act.
Modus Operandi
Police investigation revealed that this gang operated in a highly cunning manner. The accused would first park their four-wheeler at some distance from religious or tourist spots. The men and women would then work together to identify solitary women wearing expensive jewelry. After winning their trust through conversation, they would offer to drop the victims at their destination. Once the victim was inside the vehicle, they would intimidate them and force them to hand over their jewelry.
In other instances, three or four gang members would sit in an auto-rickshaw. During the journey, they would distract victims by scaring them with fake snakes, lizards, or sharp objects and then steal their jewelry.
Recovered Items
According to the police, five screwdrivers, five knives, four fake rubber snakes, five rubber lizards, and one four-wheeler were recovered from the gang.
Details Of The Accused
The arrested individuals are residents of Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Deoria, Ballia, Mau, Jaunpur, Sultanpur and Kushinagar districts. One juvenile female offender was taken into police custody and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, from where she was sent to a juvenile correctional home.

Official Statement
SP City Abhinav Tyagi stated, "Due to strict security arrangements on New Year's, this gang could not succeed in their plans. Similar vigilance will be maintained at tourist and religious places in the future to ensure the safety of the general public."
