Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway Update: Uttar Pradesh will soon get a new greenfield expressway as the government is planning to connect Gorakhpur in the east and Shamli in the west, enhancing connectivity across 22 districts of the state. The expressway, expected to be 700 kilometres long, is set to become Uttar Pradesh's second-largest expressway, with construction anticipated to begin by the end of this year.
The Gorakhpur-Shamli greenfield expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Gorakhpur and Shamli, cutting it from 15 hours to just eight hours. The expressway will also integrate with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, offering seamless access for those travelling to the mountains or heading to Delhi from Gorakhpur.
Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway Route
The route will pass through prominent districts such as Ayodhya, Lucknow, Basti, Sitapur, Rampur, Bareilly, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. It will also cover areas like Barabanki, Bahraich and Saharanpur, with facilities for emergency landings and fighter aircraft operations. These features highlight the project’s strategic importance, both for commuters and infrastructure development.
Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway Economic Impact
Estimated to cost Rs 35,000 crores, the expressway is expected to boost economic growth, enhance tourism and provide urban amenities to nearby towns and villages. Improved road connectivity is anticipated to increase footfall at tourist destinations while offering faster transportation for residents. Towns along the route stand to benefit from upgraded facilities, creating new development opportunities.
Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway Status
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will finalise the route map and alignment. This ambitious project is part of India's ongoing expressway expansion, aimed at improving transportation efficiency and reducing traffic bottlenecks.
