The construction of Uttar Pradesh’s fourth international cricket stadium at Tal Nadaur on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi route is set to gather momentum, with the state government releasing the first instalment of Rs 63.39 crore on January 19. The stadium is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 392.94 crore and is scheduled for completion by December 2027.

At present, international cricket matches in the state are hosted in Kanpur and Lucknow, while work on an international stadium in Varanasi is progressing rapidly. With the release of funds, the construction and development of the Gorakhpur International Cricket Stadium, one of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s flagship projects, has also been fast-tracked.

The main stadium complex will be developed over 45 acres, with an additional five acres earmarked for auxiliary facilities. The site is located 23.6 km from Gorakhpur airport, 22 km from Raptinagar bus stand and 20.8 km from Gorakhpur railway junction. To improve access, an approach road will be constructed to connect the stadium with the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Highway (NH-24).

Landfilling and levelling work at the site has already begun. The two-storey stadium will be built in accordance with international standards, including those of the ICC, and will feature seven main pitches and four practice pitches. It will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators and will be developed as a multipurpose venue to host international cricket matches as well as other major events.

District Magistrate Deepak Meena said that a veterinary college and a large Kanha Gaushala are also being developed in Tal Nadaur and that the entire area will see comprehensive development once the stadium is completed. The Public Works Department, which is the implementing agency, began preliminary work in the last week of December after finalising the action plan.

The stadium will be constructed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model. The project includes entry gates, security checkpoints, East and West stands, and North and South pavilions, along with parking facilities for around 1,500 vehicles.

The East and West stands will each accommodate 14,490 spectators, together offering seating for 28,980 people, with parking facilities at the ground level. Spectator amenities will include a concourse, toilets, drinking water facilities, service rooms, a first-aid room, a merchandise store, a video board and a mid-wicket camera platform.

The North Pavilion will house a VIP gallery with 208 seats and a media and broadcasters’ gallery with 382 seats, along with media lounges, broadcast control rooms and commentator facilities. The South Pavilion will feature players’ dressing rooms, match officials’ areas and a VIP and VVIP gallery with a capacity of 1,708. Additional facilities will include press conference rooms, player lounges, doping control rooms and other support infrastructure.

The Gorakhpur International Cricket Stadium is targeted for completion by December 23, 2027.
