The Ghaziabad district administration has started drafting a roadmap for the proposed ‘Greater Ghaziabad’ project, which may involve merging local bodies like Khoda, Loni, and Muradnagar into the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. The initiative follows directions from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who proposed the idea during his visit to the district on Thursday, officials said.

At a public event, he outlined a vision for unified urban development and suggested creating a larger municipal body, Greater Ghaziabad. The proposed plan, aimed at streamlining governance and improving civic infrastructure, would need to pass through legislative procedures and receive cabinet approval before implementation. The final call lies with the state government.

“On directions of the chief minister, we have asked the officials of the district administration and the corporation to chalk out a plan, which will then be submitted to the state government,” said Deepak Meena, district magistrate of Ghaziabad, according to the HT report. “The final decision will be taken at the state government level and will also involve the state cabinet.”

Ghaziabad District

Ghaziabad district is currently divided into nine local governing bodies, which include one municipal corporation, four Nagar Palikas, Khoda, Loni, Modinagar, and Muradnagar, and four Nagar Panchayats, Patla, Dasna, Faridnagar, and Niwari.

The creation of Greater Ghaziabad will expand the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) jurisdiction from 220 sq km to nearly 300 sq km. The population under GMC’s administration is expected to grow from 1.6 million to 2.5 million. Additionally, the civic body will add 114 new wards, 55 from Loni, 34 from Khoda-Makanpur, and 25 from Muradnagar, bringing the total number of wards to 214.

International Cricket Stadium In Morti

During his visit, the Chief Minister also reviewed ongoing administrative projects. He instructed the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to advance the long-delayed plan for an international cricket stadium in Morti. Proposed in 2014, the project has faced setbacks due to land use and construction challenges. Once completed, the stadium will have a seating capacity of 55,000 and become the National Capital Region’s second international cricket venue, after Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla.

Adityanath also reviewed plans for an integrated administrative complex in the city and instructed authorities to start afforestation efforts along the Hindon riverbanks. Later, he visited Kailash Mansarovar Bhavan in Indirapuram, where he distributed kits to pilgrims embarking on their yatra from the facility.
